Overview of Backup Management

The cPanel Backup interface provides essential tools for safeguarding your website data. It enables you to create and download complete backups of your site, as well as facilitate the restoration of your website from previously created backup files.

Note:

  • For users new to managing backups, the Backup Wizard interface offers a simplified approach to backup and restoration (accessible via cPanel » Home » Files » Backup Wizard).
  • Backup files generated by the system are stored in a compressed format known as tarballs, typically utilizing the .tar.gz file extension.
  • Please note that certain backup settings and features may only be visible or accessible if they have been enabled by your hosting provider's server configuration.

Understanding Full Backups

Within this section, you can initiate the creation, download, or storage of a complete account backup by selecting 'Download a Full Account Backup'. This action will navigate you to the 'Generate a Full Backup' interface.

Important:

  • It is crucial to understand that full backup files cannot be automatically restored directly through the cPanel interface. This functionality is exclusively available within WHM. For automated restoration of a full backup file, please reach out to your hosting provider for assistance.
  • Should you need to manually restore your public_html directory from a full backup file, you will first need to decompress the .tar.gz archive. Subsequently, locate and extract the relevant files from the /homedir/public_html folder within the decompressed archive, and then upload them to your account's public_html folder using cPanel’s File Manager (found under cPanel » Home » Files » File Manager).
  • Be aware that the backup process may encounter issues or fail if your account is close to or has exceeded its allocated disk quota, as the system might be unable to write essential files, such as database lock files.

Generating a Full Backup

To create a new full backup, perform the following steps:

  1. Select a storage location from the Backup Destination menu:
    • Home Directory — Choosing this option will save the backup file directly onto the server. You can then access this file via SSH or through the File Manager interface (cPanel » Home » Files » File Manager).
    • Remote FTP Server — This option allows you to transfer and store the backup file on a remote server using the FTP protocol.
    • Remote FTP Server (passive mode transfer) — Select this setting to use passive FTP to store the backup file on a remote server.
    • Secure Copy (SCP) — This option utilizes the secure copy protocol (SCP) to transfer and store the backup file on a remote server.
  2. Select a notification setting:
    • To stay informed, you can opt to receive an email notification once the backup process is complete by entering your preferred email address in the designated field.
    • Alternatively, if you prefer not to receive a notification, simply select the 'Do not send email notification of backup completion' option.
  3. You have the option to include integration links within the backup. If desired, select 'Include integration links' (note that this may encompass external account credentials).
  4. Should you choose a remote destination option, such as 'Remote FTP Server', 'Remote FTP Server (passive mode transfer)', or 'Secure Copy (SCP)' from the Backup Destination menu, you will be prompted to enter the necessary remote server details in the provided text boxes.
  5. After configuring your preferences, click Generate Backup. The system will then proceed to create and transfer the backup file to your chosen storage location.

    Note:

It is important to note that if the 'Home Directory' was selected as the backup destination, the generated backup file will also be listed under the 'Backups Available for Download' section within the 'Generate a Full Backup' interface, making it easily accessible.

Downloading Account Backups

To download a complete backup file directly to your local computer, simply select the filename of the desired backup from the Account Backups menu. These files are typically generated automatically by the system, provided your hosting provider has activated this feature.

Note:

  • Backup files are consistently named using the backup-MM-DD-YYYY format, where MM represents the month, DD the day, and YYYY the four-digit year, allowing for easy identification by date.
  • To utilize this convenient feature, it is a prerequisite that your hosting provider has enabled automatic backup generation for your account.

Managing Partial Backups

Partial backup files offer a granular approach to data protection, allowing you to back up and restore specific components of your account directly within cPanel. To download a particular item, you simply select the corresponding backup type. The system will then download the backup file, typically in a .gz compressed format, directly to your computer's default 'Downloads' folder.

Downloading a Home Directory Backup

To secure your /home directory, click on Home Directory. A backup of your home directory will encompass the following types of files:

  • All files and directories that you own, which includes your public_html content and any email data associated with your account's domains.
  • Files that, while not owned by your account, are accessible to you.

Note:

It is important to note that the backup process will exclude files within your /home directory that you neither own nor have access permissions for.

For advanced users, specific files and directories can be excluded from a backup by placing a designated configuration file within your /home directory. Consult relevant documentation for detailed instructions on how to exclude files from backups.

Downloading a Database Backup

To download a specific database associated with your account, locate and click on the desired database name listed under the Databases heading.

Downloading Email Forwarders

To download the email forwarder settings for a particular domain, simply click on the domain name displayed under the Forwarders heading.

Downloading Email Filters

To download the email filter configurations established for your account, click on the relevant filter name found under the System Filter Info heading.

Important:

It is critical to understand that the Email Filters backup file exclusively preserves account-level email filters configured within cPanel’s 'Global Email Filters' interface (accessible via cPanel » Home » Email » Global Email Filters). This backup does not include user account-level email filters that may have been set up using cPanel’s 'Email Filters' interface (cPanel » Home » Email » Email Filters).

Restoring a Partial Backup

To efficiently restore a specific portion of your account using a previously created partial backup, click Restore and then follow these steps:

  1. In the Select Restore Type section, choose the appropriate category for your restoration. For instance, if you intend to restore your /home directory, click on 'Home Directory'.
  2. Next, click the Choose File button.
  3. Browse your computer's files and select the partial backup file you wish to upload.
  4. Finally, click Upload to initiate the restoration of that specific part of your account.
