When collaborating on website development or managing subdomains for various users, it often becomes necessary to establish separate FTP (File Transfer Protocol) accounts. These accounts provide distinct access credentials, allowing individuals to securely upload, download, and manage files within designated directories on your server. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the essential steps for setting up, modifying, and removing these additional FTP accounts, ensuring efficient and secure file management for your web projects.

Creating an Additional FTP Account

To provide specific individuals with secure FTP access to your website's files, follow these detailed steps to create a new account:

  1. Navigate to the Websites & Domains section within your hosting control panel. Select the specific domain for which you wish to add an FTP account, then proceed to the FTP management area.
  2. Click on the Add an FTP Account option. This action will open a form where you can define the parameters for the new account.
  3. You will be prompted to specify the following crucial details for the new account:
    • FTP account name: Enter a unique and descriptive name for the FTP user. This name will serve as the username that collaborators or users will employ to log in to the FTP server.
    • Home directory: Carefully define the root directory to which the user will be directed upon successfully connecting to their FTP account. This setting is vital for security and organization, ensuring they only access the intended files and folders, thereby preventing unauthorized access to other parts of your server.
    • FTP password: Establish a strong, secure password for the FTP account. It is highly recommended to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols to meet complexity requirements and protect against unauthorized access attempts.
    • Hard disk quota: (Applicable on Windows hosting environments) To effectively manage server resource allocation and prevent a single user from consuming excessive space, you have the option to limit the amount of disk space this FTP user can occupy. To do so, deselect the Unlimited checkbox and input the desired disk space in megabytes (MB).
    • Read permission: (Applicable on Windows hosting environments) Granting this permission allows the FTP user to view the contents of their designated home directory and download files from it. This is suitable for users who only need to retrieve information.
    • Write permission: (Applicable on Windows hosting environments) Selecting this option enables the FTP user to perform a comprehensive range of file management operations, including creating, viewing, modifying, renaming, and deleting directories and files within their assigned home directory. This permission is typically granted to collaborators who need to actively contribute to the website content.

It is important to note that on Windows hosting environments, if no permissions (Read or Write) are explicitly granted, the user will still be able to connect to the FTP account, but the contents of the home directory will not be visible, effectively limiting their interaction.

  4. Once all the necessary details have been accurately entered and permissions configured according to your requirements, click OK to finalize the creation of the FTP account.

Modifying an Existing FTP Account

Should you need to update the properties of an existing additional FTP account, such as its designated home directory, password, or access permissions, you can easily do so by following these straightforward steps:

  1. Access the Websites & Domains section of your control panel, select your domain, and then navigate to the FTP management interface.
  2. From the list of available FTP accounts, click on the name of the specific account you wish to modify. This action will open the account's settings for editing.
  3. Make the desired adjustments to the account's settings. After making your changes, click OK to save them and apply the updates to the FTP account.

Removing an FTP Account

If an FTP account is no longer needed or if a collaborator has completed their work, you can easily and securely remove it from your system. Please be aware that the primary FTP account associated with your hosting subscription typically cannot be removed as it is essential for core website management.

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains section, select your domain, and then proceed to the FTP Access section.
  2. Locate the FTP account you wish to remove in the displayed list. Select the corresponding checkbox next to its name, and then click the Remove button.
  3. A confirmation prompt will appear, asking you to verify the deletion. To proceed with the permanent removal of the FTP account, click Yes, remove.
